Overview
This program was a 4-month design support track that was part of a longer 1.5-year engagement. This track involved design reviews, experience walkthroughs and feature development to leverage updated edge compute capabilities. The target users for the product are fleet and logistics managers, drivers, and 3rd party logistics providers. The UX design support team worked with the client to create wireframes and prototypes of the platform, testing and iterating on the design with users to ensure that it is easy to use and efficient. We also provided guidance on user interface and interaction design to aligning the design with the client's business goals and objectives.
Revolutionizing Fleet Management
How UX Design Transformed CalAmp’s Digital Platform
When I first joined CalAmp’s 4-month design support track, the team was deep into a 1.5-year journey to modernize their fleet management platform. Their technology was powerful—real-time vehicle diagnostics, crash tracking, asset monitoring—but something was missing.
Fleet managers, drivers, and logistics providers relied on a complex web of data, but accessing critical insights felt overwhelming. Missed alerts led to costly repairs, inefficient routes wasted fuel, and fleet managers struggled to track assets in real-time.
We had one mission: turn data overload into clear, actionable intelligence.
Understanding the Roadblocks
Through hands-on experience walkthroughs and user testing, we uncovered key pain points:
🚛 Fleet managers lacked preventative measures & instant crash analytics—gaps between the software experience and hardware increased risks and insurance costs.
🛣️ Inefficient asset tracking meant misplaced inventory, causing delivery delays, hindered problem solving and created operational confusion.
⚡ EV fleet adoption was growing, but charging station access was unclear, leading to underserved user base for a growing effort in sustainability
🔧 Maintenance issues weren’t flagged early enough, resulting in breakdowns and high repair costs.
We needed to design solutions that empowered users—giving them the right information, at the right time, in the right format.
The Road to Smarter Fleet Management
Crashboxx: Real-Time Crash Insights for Fleet Safety
One of the biggest concerns for fleet managers was safety. The existing system could detect crashes, but notifications were delayed, and accessing reports was cumbersome.
💡 Our Solution:
✅ Instant crash notifications via pop-ups and tracking tabs, giving fleet managers real-time awareness.
✅ Comprehensive crash history reports, with onboard video clips for deeper analysis.
✅ A safety dashboard, surfacing high-risk drivers and recurring crash patterns to prevent future incidents.
By streamlining access to crash data, we helped fleet managers respond faster, reduce risks, and improve overall fleet safety.
Smart Trailer: Optimizing Every Mile
Efficiency is everything in logistics. Fleet managers needed clearer insights into cargo space, asset assignments, and vehicle conditions to keep operations running smoothly.
💡 Our Solution:
🚛 Cargo-Sense for Hyundai: Helped fleet managers track trailer occupancy, allowing for better shipment planning and emergency response.
🔧 TPM (Tire Pressure Monitoring) Configuration: Enabled users to set tire pressure and temperature thresholds, preventing unexpected breakdowns and reducing maintenance costs.
📍 Asset Tracking System: Provided a real-time view of assigned assets, ensuring the right equipment was allocated to the right jobs.
📝 Asset History Reports: Introduced shareable fleet movement reports, increasing transparency in logistics transactions.
These features gave fleet managers better visibility into operations, helping them cut costs and boost efficiency.
